ANMELDUNG ERFORDERLICH!
In “Free”, Lea Ypi depicts her coming of age in post-Stalin Albania and in a colorful family whose history is closely interwoven with that of the country. “Free” is a compelling memoir and a perceptive reflection on the limits of progress and the burden of the past, on shining ideals and harsh realities. But above all, about the lives of people caught up in the storm of history.
Albania in 1989: The last Stalinist outpost in Europe, an isolated country that is difficult to visit and even more difficult to leave. Life is determined by an economy of scarcity, the secret police and the ruling proletariat. Communism has taken the place of religion. For ten-year-old Lea Ypi, this country is her home: a place of security, learning, hope and freedom. Everything changes when the Wall falls in Berlin and Enver Hoxha's statue topples from its pedestal in Tirana. Now people can vote for who they want, dress how they want, worship what they want. But the new era soon shows its unfriendly face: unscrupulous profiteers ruin the economy, the prospect of a better future dissolves into unemployment and mass flight. As the country threatens to descend into chaos and secrets come to light in her family, Lea begins to wonder what freedom really is.
